For newborns less than a week old, SWISS requires a medical certificate stating that they are fit to fly. Children up to 2 years of age, who are considered infants, are required to have a valid ticket, but not their own seat. However, if a child has their second birthday before the return flight, then the infant discount no longer applies, and the child fare will be charged for the entire itinerary.
Does SWISS offer discounts for infants and children?
For infants, the ticket will cost about 10% of the standard price. During the flight, the infant will sit on an adult’s lap, secured by a special seat belt. If you book a separate seat for your child, then the child fare will generally apply.
As a general rule, only one baby (up to 2 years of age) can be booked per adult. One adult may travel with two infants if a seat (child fare) has been booked for the second baby to travel in a car seat that is approved for air travel.
On most SWISS flights, children aged between 2 and 11 years travel at the favorable child’s tariff (plus the SWISS service fee, which is usually lower if you book online).
Traveling with Infants
Bassinets
For infants up to 8 months who weigh a maximum of 11 kg, SWISS provides cots, which can be reserved in advance through the SWISS Service Center. Baby cots are available, in limited numbers, on long-haul flights (all classes) and European flights (only Business Class).
Car Seats
If you have booked a separate seat for an infant, you must take your child’s seat on board the aircraft. The car seat must fit on a SWISS seat (43 x 43 cm) and be approved for air travel. Cares and LUFTIKID restraint systems are approved.
You can also take your child’s seat on board the aircraft if your child is under 12 years of age and 27 kg.
Baggage Allowances for Infants
Infants without a reserved seat are not entitled to a hand baggage allowance. Passengers traveling with small children may carry in their hand baggage milk and liquid baby food, which are exempt from the special regulations regarding liquids in hand baggage. Special baby meals are served on all flights and can be ordered from the Service Center up to 24 hours in advance.
For the Economy Light fare, SWISS will transport free of charge only a child seat, pushchair, buggy, or baby carrier.
For all other fares, the free baggage allowance for infants includes one piece of baggage with a maximum weight of 23 kg and a child seat, pushchair, buggy, or baby carrier. SWISS will give you a label for the collapsible buggy at the check-in desk so that you can take it right to the aircraft. Depending on your destination and local regulations, your buggy will be returned to you either when you disembark or on the baggage carousel.
