What is Aer Lingus policy on checked baggage allowance?
Passengers traveling on an Aer Lingus may, or may not, have a free checked baggage allowance that corresponds to carriage in the hold, without extra charge, of a quantity of baggage limited by number, weight and dimensions. Your free baggage allowance is determined based on the destination and the fare paid:
Destination/Fare | SAVER | PLUS / ADVANTAGE AERSPACE / SMART / FLEX | BUSINESS
Flights within Europe (Weight Allowance) | No free baggage allowance | 20 kg – 1 checked bag | –
Transatlantic flights (Piece Allowance) | No free baggage allowance | 1 checked bag weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs) | 3 checked bags each up to 23 kg (50 lbs)
Overall bag dimensions (length + width + height) must not exceed 158 cm (62″).
The weight of one piece of baggage must not exceed 32 kg (70 lbs). |
Carry-on
When traveling on transatlantic flights or Aer Lingus Regional flights, you are allowed to bring both the carry-on bag and the personal item on board with you.
On Aer Lingus flights within Europe, a new carry-on bag policy is applicable from June 29, 2021, offering two different ways to bring your 10 kg carry-on bag on your journey:
- Drop off your carry-on bag at check-in free of charge – drop off your carry-on bag at check-in and collect it on arrival at the baggage carousel.
- Take your carry-on bag on board – if you purchase a “Carry-on bag with priority boarding” for a fee starting from €/£ 5.99 or if you have this included as part of your booking.
A “Carry-on bag with priority boarding” is included for the following passengers:
- Traveling on Plus, Advantage, or Aer Space fares.
- Traveling with an infant (only for the accompanying adult).
- Connecting to/from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight or a flight with an interline partner.
- Silver, Platinum, and Concierge AerClub members (only for the member).
When a “Carry-on bag with priority boarding” is included, the drop-off option is not available, and you must take your carry-on bag on board with you, so remember to pack appropriately, for example, with no liquids over 100 ml.
All passengers with a “Carry-on bag with priority boarding”, either purchased or included, must use Online Check-in or Mobile Check-in.
All passengers without a “Carry-on bag with priority boarding” who bring a 10 kg carry-on bag at the boarding gate will be charged a €35 fee to place this bag in the aircraft hold. Payment of this fee will be processed using your smartphone via QR code with Aer Lingus’ partner, Global Payments, and will be verified by our boarding agents.
Excess Baggage – Flights within Europe
On flights within Europe, Aer Lingus offers three baggage options to choose from online:
- Medium Bag – allows passengers to check one bag weighing up to a maximum of 20 kg.
- Large Bag – allows passengers to check one bag weighing up to 25 kg.
- Extra Large Bag – allows passengers to check 2 bags with a combined total weight of 40 kg.
By booking your baggage online, passengers will save up to 30% on the price of airport baggage charges. If you book your flight on aerlingus.com, you can avail of the online discount and book your baggage for all applicable routes. If you did not book online, you must contact the Call Center in order to book your bags in advance.
Passengers can add a maximum of 3 pieces to the booking. Remember that no individual piece can weigh more than 32 kg.
Buying an extra bag gives the flexibility to spread the weight across more bags, but it does not increase the overall weight. If a passenger purchases 25 kg and buys an extra bag, he has a weight combined allowance of 25 kg spread over 2 bags.
General Rules
- Baggage allowance is per passenger, per direction.
- Passengers can pay baggage fees online at a discount up to two hours prior to departure, or the full fee at the airport.
- Excess weight is charged per kg per flight in excess of the allowance at the airport.
- Pooling or sharing of baggage allowance is permitted with a travel partner within the same booking and when checking in together.
