What services does Air India offer regarding minors?
The service Air India offers to minors is the Unaccompanied Minor Service. In order to benefit from this service, a special form must be filled in, and the airline must be informed about your intention to send your child on a journey alone at least 3 days in advance.
What are the age restrictions on domestic and international flights?
Children aged under 5 cannot travel as Unaccompanied Minors. For them, Air India offers another special service: if your child is below 5 years old, an air hostess can accompany him or her during the flight, should you ask for this service. You must contact Air India’s offices directly at least 3 working days prior to scheduled flight departure, in order to have enough time to complete all the necessary formalities, obtain the airline’s approval, and have the tickets issued.
On both domestic and international routes, children are eligible for Unaccompanied Minor Service and mandatory required to use it when not accompanied by an adult passenger, if they are at least 5 years old, but less than 12.
As an exception, when travelling to/from the Gulf, children are considered Unaccompanied Minors up to 16 years of age – so the upper age limit is extended.
However, the general regulations state that children who are 16 years old cannot travel as Unaccompanied Minors, consequently not being allowed to benefit from the service.
Unaccompanied Minor Service
Although online bookings can not be made for children travelling alone, provided they meet the age requirements, they are eligible for Unaccompanied Minor Service. In order for children to benefit from this service, an “Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage Form” must be completed and submitted to the airline at least 3 working days prior to scheduled flight departure.
Remember that online booking can not be made for children travelling alone, so make sure to contact any Air India office if you intend to send your child on a journey unaccompanied.
Unaccompanied Minors are accepted on Air India flights only. Air India will not accept Unaccompanied Minors for journeys involving overnight stays or interline travel at the transit point.
Unaccompanied Minors must pay the full adult fare. Children benefit from the same baggage allowance as adults travelling on the same class.
