airberlin minors flying alone

Does airberlin offer services for children traveling alone?

airberlin offers the Unaccompanied Minor Service. On transit flights via one of airberlin’s hubs, and on condition that the transit time does not exceed 2 hours, the airline will provide a person to accompany and supervise Unaccompanied Minors. Where the transit time exceeds 2 hours, carriage will be refused, except when it occurs within one booking of airberlin.

Are there any requirements for Unaccompanied Minors?

The service is mandatory for children between the ages of 5 and 11 traveling alone (not accompanied by another passenger at least 16 years old).

For children between the ages of 12 and 16, this service is optional.

Unaccompanied Minors will only be accepted if the airline has been notified and has confirmed the carriage. An official passport/identity document with a photograph must be presented upon check-in. For a child to travel alone in certain countries, written confirmation allowing travel must be provided at the check-in counter by parents/guardians (if they are divorced/separated, by both parents).

Booking

To book a flight for a child traveling alone, you must contact the airline by calling airberlin’s Service Center, or in person at airberlin’s ticket desk at the airport, with the child’s information, information about the person who will take the child to the departure airport and who will collect the child at the destination airport and the information about the person who will be invoiced. The booking must be done in advance, up to 24 hours before departure at the latest, so that the airline can confirm the carriage of the Unaccompanied Minor.

Once you have made the reservation, you must fill out the ‘duty of care’ form and print out five forms to be presented at the airport. It is recommendable to arrive at the airport two hours before the flight’s departure in order to complete all necessary formalities at the check-in desk. Web Check-in is not available for Unaccompanied Minors.

For short-haul and medium-haul flights, Unaccompanied Minors must be checked in at least 60 minutes before departure, and for long-haul flights at least 90 minutes before departure. For flights from the US, the check-in deadline for children traveling alone is 120 minutes before departure. A shoulder bag will be given to the Unaccompanied Minor to carry with him his/her ticket, boarding pass, passport or ID card and a copy of the form.

The child must be escorted at the airport by an adult, and the person who is going to escort the child must stay at the airport for 30 minutes after the flight has taken off. At certain airports, you can accompany your child to the boarding gate, but you must tell the member staff you would like to do so. Otherwise, the airport staff will accompany your child, and the flight attendants will take care of your child during the flight.
