Airtran Airways flying with babies

How old should be my baby to be allowed on an Airtran Airways flight?

Babies can travel with Southwest Airlines with no restriction regarding minimum age, provided that, for infants under 14 days old, a medical release for travel is presented. Infants under the age of 2 years must be accompanied by a passenger at least 12 years old and have a birth certificate for age verification purposes.

When am I required to purchase a ticket for my child?

No ticket purchase is required forbabies under 2 years old traveling as infant on lap. A ticket purchase is required for children ages 2 through 11 accompanied on a Southwest Airlines flight by an adult at least 12 years old.

Does Airtran Airways offer discounted fares for children?

Airtran Airways does not offer discounted fares for children of any age traveling within U.S.

For international flights with your infant sitting on your lap, the discounted infant fare is about 10% of the adult fare, plus any international taxes and surcharges.

Infant on lap

When booking a flight, check the box labeled "With infant?" to indicate that you are traveling with an infant. Until his second birthday, you may choose to travel with your infant on your lap at no additional charge on domestic flights or 10% of the adult fare on international flights.

It is recommended that you you bring onboard an ample supply of baby care items in the event that your flight is delayed, considering that you are allowed more than the standard one carry-on item when traveling with your baby.

The child may be secured in an FAA-approved child restraint device without charge if an adjacent unoccupied seat is available. However, if there are no available adjacent unoccupied seats, the child restraint device may have to be transported as Checked Baggage.

Airtran Airways offers passengers traveling with an infant on lap the option to preboard, provided that they have identified themselves to an AirTran Airways gate agent prior the start of general boarding.

Infants traveling with their own tickets

Infants traveling on a confirmed reservation will be charged the current published fare available at the time of ticketing. Only federally approved child restraint devices are permitted for use aboard Airtran Airways aircrafts.

FAA-approved Child Restraint Systems:

  • Child Restraint Systems manufactured between 1/1/61 and 2/25/85 with the following label: "This child restraint device conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards."
  • Child Restraint Systems manufactured since 26/2/85 with both of the following labels: "This child restraint device conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards" and "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft."
  • Other child restraint systems (booster seats, vests and harness devices, or lap held child belts) are not approved for use during movement on the surface, taxi, takeoff and landing. These may be used during cruise flight only. C.A.R.E.S. (Child Aviation Restraint System) is currently the only harness-type child safety device FAA approved for all points of travel.

Toddlers

When traveling with infants or small children, one Child Restraint Device (car seat) and one stroller will be accepted without charge and will not count toward the free Checked Baggage allowance. Any other items (i.e., portable crib, high chair, etc.) are subject to standard baggage fees. For ease of travel through the airport, the stroller or car seat may be gate checked just before boarding the plane. These will be returned to the aircraft jet way upon arrival at your destination.
