What is Asiana Airlines policy on pet acceptance?
Passengers intending to travel with pets should inform themselves in advance about application for services and pets. Transporting pets on Asiana flights is allowed either in the cabin, or in the hold.
Pets under 8 weeks or that have taken sedatives and sleeping pills, are pregnant, have odor problems or are vicious dogs or birds cannot be transported.
Which pets are allowed to travel on Asiana Airlines flights?
Asiana Airlines will accept to transport only dogs (except restricted dog breeds), cats and birds. Other animals like turtles, goldfish and mice cannot be transported by passenger planes and must be transported by cargo carriers. Restricted dog breeds are Tosa, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler and their cross-breeds.
Asiana will transport only one pet in the passenger cabin per adult passenger. Also, one pet per cage only (with the following exceptions: two puppies/kittens under six months, a mother and a baby pet, or a pair of birds per cage) is allowed.
Each adult passenger may travel with up to two pets as checked baggage (restrictions may apply).
Traveling with Pets
Depending on the type of aircraft or flight time, Asiana Airlines may limit the number of pets which can be carried in the cabin or checked for transportation in the hold. When traveling with pets, prior approval is required, and passengers must contact the Reservation Center to confirm the reservation for pet transportation. The pet check-in procedure shall be completed in addition to the passenger check-in procedure: the pet is weighed to determine its eligibility as carry-on or checked baggage, and the additional fee must be paid.
Pets in the Cabin
Passengers can take their pets in the cabin if:
- The weight of the pet, including the cage, does not exceed 7 kg.
- The width plus depth plus height of the cage is less than 115 cm.
- The height of the pet carrier does not exceed 21 cm (up to 26 cm for soft cases).
Pets as Checked Baggage
Pets should be carried as checked baggage if:
- The pet cage is bigger than the dimensions of the carry-on baggage.
- The weight of the pet, including the cage, does not exceed 45 kg.
- The width plus depth plus height of the cage is 285 cm.
- The height of the pet carrier is less than 84 cm.
On codeshare flights, pets cannot be transported as checked baggage. For their health and safety, transportation of pets as checked baggage may be restricted in cold weather. The health and safety of short-nosed dogs can be affected when they are exposed to stresses and hot weather. Therefore, transportation of short-nosed dogs as checked baggage is restricted from July 1 to September 30.
Documents for Quarantine Check
Whether pets can be carried and what to be prepared for quarantine check can be confirmed at the embassy of the destination country. Passengers traveling with pets should prepare the quarantine-related documents after checking the documents necessary for quarantine inspection. The quarantine office at the airport in Korea issues a medical certificate for pets under 3 months and a quarantine check certificate for pets over 3 months when you submit the certificate of rabies vaccination. The Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency website offers information on bringing pets from overseas to Korea.
Preparation of the Carrier
Two pets shall not be put in a single carrier. When carrying birds, the carriage shall be covered with cloth so that the birds cannot be seen. The carrier shall be built with sturdy materials, such as metal, wood and plastic. The carrier may include cloth and leather, but it shall have a frame to maintain the shape.
Fees
Pets are not included in the free baggage allowance. Passengers will need to pay the applicable excess baggage fee regardless of how the pet is transported (in the cabin or in the hold).
Guide Dogs
Asiana Airlines will transport free of charge Guide Dogs accompanying sight/hearing impaired passengers together with containers and food, in addition to the passenger’s normal free baggage allowance. An ID from certified institution is required. The Guide Dog must wear a harness and sit at the passenger’s feet during flight. The destination country or transfer country’s quarantine procedure standards must be respected. On long trips, food from connecting flight locations is allowed, and the cost and preparation of food will be the passenger’s responsibility.
