Blue1 was born in 1987 in Helsinki, Finland, as Air Botnia, starting operations in 1988.
In January, 1998, Air Botnia was purchased by SAS.
In 2004, Flying Finn, the first low cost regional airline in Finland, went bankrupt, and Air Botnia was rebranded as Blue1. Soon, it started to serve the most profitable destinations previously handled by Flying Finn.
In November, 2004, Blue1 became the first regional member of Star Alliance.
Two years later, Blue1 started flying to 11 new European destinations.
In 2007, 1.6 million passengers travelled with Blue1.
On November 1st, 2012, Blue1 became a service producer for SAS. This means that its flights carry the SAS flight prefix "SK" and marketing and sales are handled by SAS (including the use of the SAS internet domain name).
No fatal accidents involving Blue1 aircraft have been recorded so far.
