Does Canjet impose age restrictions for infants?
Canjet permits infants over 7 days but under 2 years of age to travel with an accompanying adult (at least 18 years of age), free of charge when they don’t need to occupy a seat. However, a baby under 7 days of age may be accepted upon medical authorization from a physician. It is required to have a birth certificate to validate the age of the infant below 2 years of age, as well as a photo identification of the parents or legal guardians.
When am I required to reserve a seat for my baby?
Infants (children under 2 years of age) do not require a reservation when traveling on the lap of the accompanying adult (the child doesn’t occupy a seat).
A ticket is required for all children 2 years of age and over. Also, when you want your baby to enjoy the comfort and safety of his/her own car seat during the flight, instead of holding your baby, you must reserve a seat for the infant.
Baggage allowance
If you’re traveling with an infant, you will be allowed to carry some baby and child equipment, as 1 stroller, 1 car seat free of charge. Strollers of regular size and weight can be used up to the door of the aircraft on departure and delivered at the gate upon arrival. Any additional item (such as a booster seat, additional car seat, playpen, etc.) exceeding your free checked baggage allowance will be subject to excess baggage charges.
Infants without reserved seats do not have a baggage allowance. Any baby that has a reserved seat has the free baggage allowance that corresponds to his/her travel cabin.
Infants with reserved seats
If you choose to reserve a seat for your infant (children under 2 years of age), you are entitled to use a child restraint device (car seat) if he/she weights less than 40 lbs. The child must remain at all times properly secured when the aircraft seat belt sign is illuminated during the journey. The car seat cannot be used on an emergency row or in a seat that may impede access to an aisle or to an emergency/safety equipment. The car seat has to meet the safety standards set by the CMVSS and FMVSS. There are other safety restrictions that the car seat must meet in order to travel inside the aircraft cabin:
- Canadian Manufactured Devices:
- It must indicate compliance with either CMVSS 213 or 213.1.
- The date of manufacture has to be after January 1981.
- American Manufactured Devices:
- If manufactured between January 1981 – February 1985, then it must bear a label that indicates “This child restraint system conforms to all the applicable FMVSS”, or
- If manufactured after February 1985, it must bear a label that indicates “This child restraint system conforms to all the applicable FMVSS” and another label that indicates “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft)".
- The car seat cannot be wider than 40 cm (15.5 in).
Toddlers
For any children older than 2 years of age you must reserve a ticket, it will give them the right to the free baggage allowance that corresponds to his/her travel cabin. They must be accompanied by an adult or a legal guardian. On most Canjet flights from Canada, children will receive an activity book that contains a few stickers, games, and a beach ball in a special bag for his/her to keep (varying upon availability). They will be handed out by Canjet’s flight attendant onboard during your flight.
