China Southern Airlines Baggage and Carry-on

What is the carry-on allowance?

As a general rule, the carry-on allowance for China Southern Airlines is established by weight, size, and the number of pieces:

Travel ClassNumber of PiecesMaximum Weight

Maximum Size

Economy, Premium Economy, Business15 kg115 cm (45 in)
(L+W+H)

Should your hand baggage exceed any of the above-mentioned limits, the flight staff is entitled to deny its carriage in the cabin, and you will have to register it as checked luggage. If the free checked baggage allowance is exceeded, you will need to pay excess baggage fees.

In addition to the above, you may also carry the following items free of charge: a small handbag, briefcase or backpack, a laptop, a coat or blanket, a small camera, an umbrella or walking stick, baby food for the flight, and a baby basket and folding stroller.

It is highly recommended that you include in your carry-on baggage all the valuables you might want to transport (important documents, precious metals, jewelry, cash, etc.). Placing them in the checked baggage should be seen as a possible risk, and their eventual damage or loss falls entirely on you.

What is the free checked baggage allowance?

There are many criteria based on which the free checked baggage allowance is established (such as the class of travel, the route, whether the flight is domestic or international, whether the passenger is an adult, an infant, or a member of the Sky Pearl Club, etc.):

** Exceptions may apply (e.g., 2 x 23 kg with Economy Flex tickets between South Korea and China, excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan).

For a domestic segment of an international journey, the free baggage allowance will be calculated in accordance with that of the international journey.

Excess Baggage Fees

Depending on whether the route is domestic or international, your checked baggage will be charged whether on the Weight Concept or the Piece Concept.

On domestic routes, the rate for overweight baggage is 1.5% of the applicable one-way Economy class ticket on the day of billing per kilogram, calculated in CNY currency. However, on national routes, one piece of checked baggage must not exceed 50 kg.

International flights have their maximum values set depending on whether the US is involved or not in the route, regardless of the fact that we are talking about an international, regional or domestic flight connecting with them:

  • When US routes are involved, the maximum weight of each piece is set to 45 kg (90 lbs), while its total linear dimensions must be under 203 cm.
  • When US routes are not involved, each piece of checked baggage must not exceed 32 kg (70 lbs), and its total linear dimensions must not be above 203 cm.

All international and regional flights carried by China Southern Airlines will have their excess baggage fees established on a piece-based system, as follows:

Baggage Services

Once you acknowledged the loss or damage of your baggage, you should immediately contact the airport service counter, to allow the searching process to commence in the shortest time possible. However, if the loss or damage of your luggage is not clearly the airline’s fault, you will not be compensated for it.

After informing the airport’s staff about the situation, a China Southern Airlines agent will help you fill out a “Baggage Transportation Accident Record”.
