When must I check in when traveling with Delta Airlines?
For traveling within the U.S., Delta Airlines recommends that you arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure. The minimum required check-in time¹ differs depending on departure city, and whether you need to check in baggage or not, but it is never less than 30 minutes before departure.
If you are using the Delta Shuttle service, minimum check-in time varies between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on departure city, and whether you need to check in baggage or not.
For international flights,Delta Airlines recommends you arrive at the airport 3 hours before scheduled departure, and requires you to check in at least 60 minutes before departure time. An earlier check-in time¹ is required in several cities.
Online Check-in
Documents
To start online check-in you need one of the following:
- A SkyMiles number and PIN.
- A confirmation number.
- The credit card number used for paying for your ticket.
Availability
Online Check-in is available for eTickets issued by any travel agency or online agency, for domestic or international flight, and when connecting on Delta’s Through Check-in partners.
You can check in online at any time within this time frame: 24 hours prior to your flight, and 30 minutes before for a domestic flight, respectively 60 minutes before for an international flight. Where earlier check-in time applies, you must comply with that special requirement!
If you have connecting flights and the first flight is operated by Delta Airlines, you can check in online.
You cannot check in online for a flight operated by a codeshare partner.
Options
When checking in online, you may:
- Select the passengers to check in.
- Select the number of bags and pay for excess baggage, if applicable.
- View/change seat assignments.
- Upgrade status.
- Request delivery of an eBoarding Pass to your mobile device, if available.
After completing your check-in process, you must print your boarding pass. If unable to print it before arriving at the airport, you can print one at a kiosk or see a Delta representative. If you forget to print the boarding pass after you checked in, you can redo the process online, or use an airport kiosk to print it.
Mobile Check-in
The Fly Delta app for smartphones and iPad offers you an easy and convenient way to check in on the go, for both domestic and international flights. With the Fly Delta app, you can:
- View, change or upgrade your seat.
- Pay baggage fee.
- Add Trip Extras.
- Check in, or get checked in automatically 24 hours before departure, and get your eBoarding Pass.
If you do not have the Fly Delta app, you can still check in from your mobile device by visiting Delta Mobile Web.
Kiosk Check-in
Self-service Kiosk is a fast and easy option to use when you did not check in before arriving at the airport, online or from your mobile device. Kiosk check-in is available for both domestic and international flights.
You can check in 24 hours prior to departure time, the earliest. All you have to do to start your check-in process is to find your itinerary by using one of the following options:
- Inserting your credit card, passport or SkyMiles card.
- Scanning the barcode on your printed itinerary.
- Typing your confirmation, ticket or SkyMiles number.
Options
More than one passenger can check in at the airport kiosk, when more passengers are booked in the same reservation. In this case, the check-in process will be completed only for the selected passengers. While checking-in via kiosk, you can:
- Change your reservation for an earlier flight.
- Upgrade seats / cabin.
- Check bags.
- Add Trip Extras.
Curbside Check-in
Curbside check-in is convenient because you get the same service as you would get while checking in at the ticket counter, only you do not have to carry your bags in the airport. You can check in at the curb in approximately 100 U.S. airports. All you need to do is to identify yourself as a passenger (present your photo ID and confirmation number, destination, flight number or eTicket number) and hand your checked bags to the Skycap. There is no fee for the service.
Boarding
For domestic flights, you must be at the boarding gate at least 15 minutes before scheduled departure time, and for Delta Shuttle flights just 5 minutes before departure time.
For international flights, minimum required boarding time is 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure unless special time requirements apply.
You must have your printed boarding pass within reach. If you have an eBoarding Pass, make sure that backlight is on, and the entire barcode image is visible on the screen and ready for scanning.
