What is the carry-on allowance?

The carry-on allowance for Hainan Airlines’ flights varies depending on the type of flight. There are different carry-on allowances for domestic flights, as well as for international ones. Flights between China and the USA, respectively between China and other international destinations have their own well established carry-on allowances.

Certain items can be carried in the passenger cabin besides the usual carry-on allowance, such as: items necessary for special passengers (crutches, wheelchairs, etc.), baby items for infant passengers (baby food, baby carrier), an umbrella, an overcoat, a bag / box containing duty free items, a book, newspaper or magazine for reading during the flight, a handbag, a laptop.

What is the free checked baggage allowance?

Once again, the route and travel class are the main criteria for calculating the free baggage allowance, which is set by the Weight Concept or Piece Concept:

Excess Baggage Fees

The excess baggage charges vary depending on the route and the type of flight:

  • Domestic flights – excess baggage charge set at 1,5% of the highest one-way fare in Economy Class per additional kilogram.
  • International flights – excess baggage fees are set per piece and per each exceeded limit (number, weight, and size). For checked baggage exceeding more than one limit, all baggage fees that apply will be accumulated, except for Canadian routes, where only the highest of excess, overweight and oversized charges will be collected (instead of cumulating the fees).

Every piece of checked in baggage should not weigh more than 32 kg (70 lbs), and should measure (L+W+H) at most 203 cm (80 in). If these values are exceeded, you must contact Hainan Airlines for prior approval of carriage.

Baggage Services

Should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of losing your luggage, you are advised to inform the airport staff immediately upon arrival – file your report by contacting Baggage Hotline at +86-898-6575 / +86-898-6087, or contact your local airport’s staff if you need any assistance. Hainan Airlines uses a computerized baggage tracking system, which is a very useful tool for baggage identification and retrieval in such situations.

Through their Baggage Inquiry System, Hainan Airlines can track your baggage and keep you up-to-date on its status. If you require its transfer to a designated location, the airline’s staff can deliver your baggage to a specified address of your choice.

The Baggage Damage policy is also customer-oriented. For example, if your baggage was damaged and could not be repaired on the spot, a professional repair shop or a company contracted by Hainan Airlines will take care of it or replace it with a new bag. You will be compensated for the repair cost, should that be the case.

The eventual damage to your baggage should be reported immediately at Hainan’s baggage services office, at the airport where you discovered the damage. You also have the option of contacting the airport staff before leaving. Hainan’s airport / baggage representative will take visual note of the baggage’s current state, and appropriate measures will be taken.

You can file a report and opt for the Baggage Damage Service only if your baggage has suffered serious damage. Evidence of wear or scratches on your luggage will not make you eligible for the service, since this is normal during standard handling procedures.
