What services does Hainan Airlines offer regarding minors?
Hainan Airlines accepts for carriage minors both accompanied and unaccompanied, but for minors travelling alone an Unaccompanied Traveler Application form must be filled in, so that your child could be eligible for Unaccompanied Minor Service.
What are the age restrictions on domestic and international flights?
Minors aged between 5 and 12, who do not travel in the company of an adult, must be registered as Unaccompanied Minors. The Unaccompanied Minor service is free of charge, but on international and regional routes the full adult fare will be charged, while on domestic routes the child fare will be charged.
Children aged between 12 and 15 can also benefit from this service, but under special circumstances, which will require prior arrangements. While on domestic flights, the Unaccompanied Minor service is free of charge, for regional and international flights a USD 70 / CAD 75 / EUR 50 / CNY 500 fee applies for each international segment.
Unaccompanied Minor Service
This service allows your child to travel unaccompanied by an adult and reach safely the destination previously set by parents or legal guardians. The first step to enroll your child into this service is to contact any Hainan Airlines ticket office, or call their service hotline.
Firstly, Hainan Airlines will try to make sure that all your minor’s documents are carried with them at all times and in good order, by providing them with a “Little Traveler” folder. Specially trained staff will take care of your child during standard procedures, for check-in, security checks and customs clearance, as well as look after the minor and their documents while waiting for boarding.
Your child’s travel documents will be handed over to the crew members of the plane, and from there on they will be fully responsible for their safety during the entire journey.
Should unscheduled flight delays occur, a responsible staff member will see that you child will get the proper accommodation, food and transportation – if necessary. Of course, you will be promptly informed of the respective delay, as well as if a flight cancellation occurs – in which case your minor will be brought back to the airport of departure.
Finally, upon arrival, the personnel designated to take care of your child will help with the baggage claim, and will thoroughly check the identity of the person responsible with meeting your minor at the airport of destination.
Restrictions
You should book the ticket for your child in a timely manner, as the Unaccompanied Minor Service is limited, and your child might not have a place at the desired time of journey. Do not forget to take into consideration that tickets for Unaccompanied Minors cannot be booked online.
Children travelling alone are not eligible for the Unaccompanied Minor Service if:
- The flight itinerary consists of more than one segment.
- They have a disability.
- The ticket was bought from another company or a ticket office not registered by Hainan Airlines.
- The itinerary included connecting flights with Hainan Airlines (excluding flights connecting with the same plane) or other airlines.
- Hainan Airlines shares flight numbers for market codes.
For a journey with multiple segments and connecting flights, your child must be temporary picked up and taken care of by an authorized person, until the next check-in of their flight.
Documents
In order to adhere to this service, the parent or tutor must provide all relevant travel documentation for the child (valid ID Card, passport, flight tickets etc.), as well as all other documents considered important. The parent or tutor is also supposed to provide their own identification documents, beside the child’s. Part of the service’s formalities is also completing the Unaccompanied Traveler Application form, which will have to be submitted upon buying the ticket.
The parent is also responsible for providing the complete and accurate identification and contacting information of the party entrusted to pick up the child at the destination. These requirements must be met at the airport of departure.
Drop-off and Pick-up
The first thing you must do to for a successful boarding of your minor is to take him or her to the airport at least one hour prior to departure, take care of all the check-in formalities, and stay at the airport until the flight takes off.
This is a necessary measure in case something unexpected intervenes, and you might be needed there for a while longer. From this point on, special designated staff members will take care of your child and assist them with all embarkment and disembarkment procedures, as well as with everything he or she might need during the flight.
Upon arrival to the destination, the person responsible for pick-up will be kept up-to-date at all times regarding all flight information. When the plane lands, the crew members will entrust the minor to the appointed ground staff, and, from there on, the ground staff will see that the child will successfully go through all the formalities, and finally arrive safely into the custody of the designated guardian.
