JetBlue Airways minors flying alone

What are the age restrictions for children traveling alone?

Children under 5 years old are not allowed to travel alone on JetBlue Airways flights.

Children from 5 to 13 years old may travel alone as Unaccompanied Minors.

Children who have reached their 14th birthday by the day of the flight may travel alone, but they are no longer considered Unaccompanied Minors. However, additional assistance may be provided to the child if requested by phone.

Are children allowed to travel alone on international flights?

JetBlue Airways allows children to travel as Unaccompanied Minors on all international flights, but additional requirements regarding documentation (e.g. passports, a notarized parental letter of consent, etc.) may apply. Documentation requirements vary based on the destination country¹.

How can I book a flight for an Unaccompanied Minor?

You can book a flight for an Unaccompanied Minor over the phone or online. If you booked the Unaccompanied Minor online, the Unaccompanied Minor form is available online to be filled out prior to travel. Three copies of the completed form for each flight must be brought to the airport.

For international flights booked online, you must call JetBlue Reservations upon receiving your confirmation number. The reservation crewmember will require you to provide all necessary information about the person dropping off and picking up the child: name, address, and phone number, as it appears on the photo ID.

Unaccompanied Minor Service

For children from 5 to 13 years traveling alone, the Unaccompanied Minor service is mandatory. JetBlue Airways assigns seats at the back of the plane (Row 25 ABC on A320, 25 AB on E190, 32ABC on A321 Core, 29ABC on A321 Mint) to Unaccompanied Minors so as to be assisted by the inflight crew when needed.

Unaccompanied Minors have the checked baggage allowance corresponding to the fare purchased. Unaccompanied Minors are always allowed to bring a personal item and a carry-on bag on board, even when booked on a Blue Basic fare.

JetBlue Airways only allows Unaccompanied Minors to travel on nonstop flights (flights scheduled to operate between origin and destination airports without any intermediate stops).

Restrictions

JetBlue Airways does not allow Unaccompanied Minors to travel on connecting flights or direct flights (flights that make a stop but do not involve a change of aircraft).

JetBlue Airways does not allow Unaccompanied Minors to travel on any codeshare or interline flights.

Drop-off and Pick-up

A photo ID is required for both adults, the person dropping off the Unaccompanied Minor and the person picking up the child at the destination.

Upon arriving at the airport, the Unaccompanied Minor must check in at the Full Service ticket counter. The adult accompanying the child at the airport must provide, in writing, evidence that the child will be met by another responsible adult at the destination. You may request a gate pass to accompany your child to the departure gate. In some airports², gate passes are not permitted. In this case, a JetBlue crewmember will accompany your child to the gate.

When dropping off your child, you may not leave the airport until:

  • You have a signed copy of the Unaccompanied Minor form.
  • The Unaccompanied Minor is onboard the aircraft.
  • Your name, address, and cell phone number are all documented on the minor’s reservation.

In the event of a gate return, you will be contacted by a JetBlue crewmember so that you can immediately return to the airport to meet your child.

The adult dropping off a child traveling alone on an international flight must remain in the terminal until the flight has departed.

The adult picking up the Unaccompanied Minor must be at least 18 years old and arrive at the airport at least 30 minutes before the scheduled arrival. The adult may meet the child in the arrivals area, when a gate pass is issued, or at the JetBlue ticket counter or Baggage Service Office, when gate passes are not permitted. The child will be released only in the custody of the person indicated in the Unaccompanied Minor form upon presentation of a government issued photo ID. The adult picking up the Unaccompanied Minor will be required to sign a release form.
