Malaysia Airlines check-in

How can I check in for a Malaysia Airlines flight?

When traveling on Malaysia Airlines flights, various options are available for passengers to check in before or after arriving at the airport:

  • Self-service check-in:
    • Web Check-in.
    • Mobile Check-in.
    • Kiosk Check-in.
  • Kuala Lumpur City Air Terminal (KL CAT).
  • Counter Check-in.

Please note that self-check-in is mandatory for all Economy Class passengers traveling on Malaysia Airlines, except flights to Kathmandu and Dhaka.

What are the advantages of using one of the self-service check-in options?

The self-service check-in options are available to any e-ticket holder with a confirmed booking. Advance check-in can be done up to 48 hours before departure, using Web, Mobile, or Kiosk Check-in facility. Passengers can have their baggage dropped off and tagged 1 hour before take-off.

Passengers without checked baggage can go straight to the boarding gate. Passengers with checked baggage should bring along the printed or mobile boarding pass and travel documents to the Self-Service Check-in Kiosk/Bag Drop Counter no later than 60 minutes before departure.

To help reduce check-in time, Malaysia Airlines introduced the Self-Print Baggage Tag service for all Economy Class domestic and international flights from Kuala Lumpur (KLIA). Even if you’ve already used Web or Mobile Check-in, you will need to print your own baggage tags at a self-service check-in kiosk and tag your baggage before proceeding to the Bag Drop counter. If you travel with excess baggage, you must go to the Bag Drop counter to process the excess baggage and then to the Excess Baggage counter for payment before your baggage is accepted.

For Malaysia Airlines flights, boarding gates close 30 minutes before flight departure time and, if you arrive late at the gate, you will be denied boarding.

Do I have the option to check in for connecting and/or return flights?

With Return Check-in, passengers can enjoy a one-time check-in to multiple destinations within Malaysia and to Singapore. When traveling on connecting flights, one-shot Through Check-in allows you to check in to your final destination, and all baggage will be transferred directly as long as you are holding a single PNR.

Malaysia Airlines offers Through Check-in over the counter to the final destination for passengers and baggage if you’re traveling on separate tickets when travel begins with a Malaysia Airlines flight connecting with a flight operated by a oneworld partner airline, a codeshare partner carrier, or a subsidiary airline (Firefly and MASwings).

Web Check-in

The Web Check-in facility enables passengers to check in online, select a preferred seat and print the boarding pass conveniently from their home or office. This service is available for groups of up to 9 guests. Web Check-in is open from 2 days and up to 90 minutes before departure.

When Web Check-in is completed, passengers will be given the option to print their boarding pass or receive a Mobile Boarding Pass. However, if further verification is required at the airport, passengers can print only a Check-in Confirmation Receipt, which must be exchanged with a boarding pass at a check-in counter.

Mobile Check-in

This service is available from 48 hours up to 90 minutes before departure. Passengers checking in with the mobile service will receive a Mobile Boarding Pass or a PDF boarding pass, depending on the requirement of the departure airport authorities, and a mobile check-in confirmation email:

  • Mobile Boarding Pass – saved automatically on the Malaysia Airlines app or an SMS with a link. Mobile Check-in with Mobile Boarding Pass is only available for domestic flights and flights to/from ASEAN destinations.
  • PDF boarding pass – as an attachment in the mobile check-in confirmation email that you must print before arriving at the airport.

The mobile boarding pass will contain a 2D barcode, which can be scanned at the gate during boarding and airport security checkpoints. Only one boarding pass per mobile phone is issued as boarding takes place one passenger at a time.

Kiosk Check-in

Check-in Kiosks allow passengers to check in, choose a preferred seat, and print the boarding pass on the spot, at the airport. This service is available from 2 days and up to 60 minutes before departure. Check-in Kiosks are currently available at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Kota Bharu, Johor Bahru, Langkawi, Adelaide, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Singapore.

Kiosk Check-in service is open to all passengers except passengers with Special Service Requests, groups of more than nine passengers, and passengers with standby tickets.

Kuala Lumpur City Air Terminal (KL CAT)

Passengers using the KLIA Ekspres train service can check in and drop their baggage at Kuala Lumpur City Air Terminal (KL CAT) located inside the KL Sentral station. The service is available only for holders of valid KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit tickets, up to 2 hours before departure for international flights, and 90 minutes for domestic flights without luggage.

Counter Check-in

The Counter Check-in closing times for Malaysia Airlines flights are:

  • Kuala Lumpur International Airport and international airports: 60 minutes before departure for all flights.
  • Domestic airports:
    • 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights.
    • 60 minutes before departure for international flights.
