With roots dating back in 1970, when Oman International Services commenced civil aircraft handling services at the Beit Al Falaj Airport, Oman Air was established in 1993.
In July, 1993, the first Oman Air international flight takes off to Dubai, using a leased Boeing 737-700.
During 1994, flights to Kuwait, Karachi, Sri Lanka and Colombo joined the network.
In the following 3 years, new destinations are being added, helping Oman Air maintain its growth rate.
In October, 1998, Oman Air becomes a IATA member.
After a few more years of expansion, Boeing 737-800s are added to Oman Air’s fleet, in 2001.
In 2007, Oman Air introduced two new international destinations – London and Bangkok.
In September, 2009, the first Airbus A330-200 joins the fleet, and the airline signed a contract with Embraer for the purchase of five Embraer E175 aircraft.
In March 2010, Oman Air became the 1st airline in the world to introduce both Internet OnAir and Mobile OnAir Mobile services, thus offering full mobile phone and WiFi connectivity on selected routes.
From March to December 2010, Oman Air added two brand new A330 to its fleet (one with three-class configuration and one with two-class configuration) and 9 new destinations to its network, among which Kuala Lumpur, Kathmandu, Dammam, and Milan.
In 2011, two brand new Embraer E175 aircraft with two-class configuration were added to the fleet, and Oman Air commenced operations to Zanzibar and Zurich.
In 2012, the excellence of Oman Air’s Business Class was recognized internationally, the airline winning awards like Best Business Class Unisex Amenity Bag at the TravelPlus Airline Amenity Bag Awards 2011, ‘Best Business Class Airline Seat’ at the prestigious World Airline Awards, run by Skytrax, and ‘Best Business Class Airline, Middle East’ at the prestigious Business Destinations Travel Awards 2012.
On April 26, 2013, Oman Air achieved an outstanding result when every scheduled service from each one of Oman Air’s 42 destinations took off with no delay whatsoever. Pursuing its goal to deliver punctuality and to further improve the very high, award-winning standards of its products, services and passenger experience, Oman Air has developed an enviable reputation for quality.
In July 2013, Oman Air formally opened exclusive new First Class and Business Class check-in lounge at Muscat International Airport. The launch of the new check-in facilities underlines Oman Air’s commitment to providing its premium customers with the ultimate air travel experience.
In December 2014, Oman Air was named as the World’s Leading Airline – Economy Class at the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony. Earlier this year, the World Travel Awards named Oman Air as Best Business Class Airline – Middle East and Best Economy Class Airline – Middle East.
In March 2015, Oman Air announced it will launch services to three exciting destinations. The national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman started flying that year from Muscat to Singapore and Goa from March and to Dhaka from August.
In 2016, Oman Air witnessed remarkable growth, with a huge 21% increase in passenger numbers, carrying over 7.7 million passengers compared to 6.4 million passengers carried in 2015, and an increase in the load factor up to 20%. The airline also continued its program of expansion by upgrading its Airbus fleet and adding to its fleet four brand new Boeing 737-800s, the aircraft that is the backbone of the airline’s long-haul and medium-haul fleet.
In 2017, Oman Air continued its dynamic programme of the fleet and network expansion, adding to its fleet a new type of aircraft Boeing B787-9 to serve European and Far Eastern routes, as well as to invest in providing guests with the best possible onboard experience, renovating the First Class cabins of its three A330-300 aircraft.
In February 2018, Oman Air took delivery of its first Boeing B737 MAX 8 of 30 aircraft on order. They will serve both domestic and short to medium international sectors. The new B737 MAX in a two-class configuration, 12 new Business Class seats and 150 seats in Economy Class, will serve domestic routes, as well as short-haul and medium-haul international routes. By the end of 2018, Oman Air will receive a total of 5 new MAX aircraft, as well as 3 Boeing B787-9, two of which in a three-class configuration with 8 First Class private Mini Suites.
In 2018, Oman Air launched two new destinations, Casablanca (Morocco) in June and Istanbul (Turkey) in July, and plans to launch service to Moscow (Russia) and Male (Maldives) in October. The new routes are part of the airline’s strategic network expansion plan.
No deadly incident involving Oman Air has been recorded so far.
