What measures has Qantas been taking to ensure a safe flight during the COVID-19 pandemic?
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Qantas is taking all measures to ensure a safe travel environment at airports and on board the aircraft and give passengers extra peace of mind:
- To keep passengers informed, Qantas’ COVID-19 travel updates page offers the latest network and travel restriction information.
- For the safety and wellbeing of both passengers and employees, Qantas’ Fly Well program comprises a series of temporary and existing health and safety measures to give you peace of mind at each point of your journey.
- Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, Qantas introduced Fly Flexible so you can book your next flight with confidence.
Network and Travel Restriction Information
Qantas does all possible to keep you informed of travel updates, including Government entry requirements and the choices available to you. Before booking and before you travel, ensure you check Qantas’ Travel updates page for the latest information on:
- Australian domestic travel: new routes, timetable, domestic network, travel restrictions (e.g., mandatory health declarations, mandatory face masks, entry permits, quarantine, etc.), temporary inflight and airport service changes.
- Travel between Australia and New Zealand: quarantine-free flights, flight network, travel restrictions (e.g., mandatory health declarations, the use of face masks, entry permits, quarantine, etc.), inflight and airport services.
- International travel: all Qantas international flights, except certain trans-Tasman flights, are currently suspended, but flights to most international destinations will resume in late October 2021.
Qantas encourages all Australian residents to download and activate the COVIDSafe app that helps state and territory officials to quickly contact people who may have been exposed to the virus and gives you extra reassurance if you are traveling.
Fly Well
Qantas’ Fly Well program brings together a series of health and safety measures to create a safe and positive environment for everyone at each point of your journey:
On all domestic and trans/Tasman flights, wearing a face mask covering your mouth and nose is mandatory as soon as you enter the departure airport, at all times on board, and until you leave your destination airport. The only passengers exempt are those under 12 years of age or who have a medical condition.
At the airport, you can limit your contact with others by using Online Check-in and the self-service Bag Drop, thus saving time and helping minimize crowding at check-in kiosks and service desks. Social distancing signs have been placed throughout the airport. Regularly, highly frequented areas are thoroughly cleaned.
At the departure gate, Qantas puts at your disposal hand sanitizing stations and Fly Well packs that contain a face mask and sanitizing wipes. Digital boarding pass scanners allow for the self-scanning of boarding passes.
On board the plane, though the risk of inflight transmission remains extremely low, Qantas introduced additional safety measures and changes to its inflight services:
- Cabin air is refreshed every few minutes, ensuring the highest possible air quality. The aircraft air conditioning systems are fitted with hospital-grade HEPA filters, which remove 99.9% of all particles, including viruses. The direction of inflight airflow is from the ceiling to the floor.
- Aircraft go through an enhanced cleaning process with a disinfectant effective against coronaviruses, with a focus on high contact areas: seats, seatbelts, overhead lockers, air vents, and toilets.
- Once seated, the Qantas crew will ask you to limit movement around the cabin. Additional sanitizing wipes are available on request.
- Qantas temporarily reduced the food and beverage offering and temporarily paused the inflight entertainment. It’s recommended that you bring your own entertainment material on longer flights.
Fly Flexible
Aware that sometimes plans need to change, Qantas introduced Fly Flexible so that you can enjoy unlimited fee-free date changes for:
- Domestic and trans-Tasman Australian flights booked until July 31, 2021, for travel until February 28, 2022.
- International flights booked between February 25 – July 31, 2021, for travel between November 1, 2021 – December 31, 2022.
Just change your travel dates before your scheduled date of departure, and Qantas will waive the change fee. You’ll have to select a new travel date within 12 months of the original booking date and, if the case, cover any applicable fare increase for the new flights.
If your flight is canceled by Qantas, if possible, you’ll be rebooked on the next available flight to your destination at no additional cost. However, you can choose a refund or Flight Credit, and no cancellation or change fees will be charged.
