Are there any restrictions regarding infants traveling on Singapore Airlines flights?
To fly with your infant on Singapore Airlines flights, your baby must be at least 7 days old. In exceptional cases, you may fly with a newborn between 48 hours and 7 days of age if you have medical clearance. Infants less than 2 years old are required to travel with an adult.
When do I have to purchase a ticket and reserve a seat for my baby?
In case you are traveling alone with two infants (aged 7 days to under 2 years), you are required to make special arrangements to reserve a seat for the second infant through your local Singapore Airlines office.
Children from 2 to 11 years old require their own ticket and are eligible for special fares that are usually a percentage of the adult fare. The children’s tickets should be bought at the same time as the accompanying adult ticket.
What are Singapore Airlines’ policies for baby travel?
It is not mandatory to purchase a separate seat for babies up to 2 years old. Nevertheless, Singapore Airlines should be informed that your baby is traveling on your lap. Only one baby per passenger is allowed to travel on lap. If you choose to purchase a separate seat for your baby, please be advised that you will need an approved child restraint device. This device can be a car-type child seat or child harness. Finally, there are restrictions on seating in exit rows with babies and children up to 15 years old. They are definitely not accepted by the airline’s regulations.
Accepted Child Restraint Devices
Only children under 3 years of age may use car-type child seats. Accepted devices should be forward- or aft-facing and securely fixed by means of the aircraft safety belts. Adequate approval by a foreign airworthiness authority/government standards (Civil Aviation Authority from the United Kingdom, Federal Aviation Administration of the United States of America, Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, etc.) is required for these devices.
Approved car seats must fit within the armrests of the typical passenger seat (width x depth) in each travel class:
- Economy – 17 x 27 in.
- Premium Economy – 18 x 31 in.
- Business – 19 x 33 in.
- First – 36 x 42 in.
- Suites – 23 x 64 in.
The child harness approved by the FAA can also be used, but you must inform your local office because the CARES child harness does not fit on all aircraft and seat types. It cannot be installed on Business Class seats on A380-800 aircraft, as well as First and Business Class seats on B777-300ER aircraft.
If you are using a child harness or child car seat, you should provide to the cabin crew or ground staff the device’s manufacturing standards and instructions. No child restraint device can be installed on seats in an emergency exit row, as well as on the rows immediately before and after an emergency exit row.
Baggage Allowances
Over and above your cabin baggage allowance (subject to local country-specific restrictions, if any), you may carry on board free of charge the infant’s food and care items (up to 6 kg). A foldable lightweight stroller may be taken in the passenger cabin only if it meets the standard cabin baggage restrictions (up to 7 kg and 115 cm), but it will count towards your cabin baggage allowance for your class of travel as one piece of cabin baggage.
For infants with reserved seats and children, the baggage allowance corresponding to their travel class will apply.
For an infant traveling on your lap, depending on your itinerary, you may check without charge:
- 1 piece not exceeding 158 cm (62 in) and maximum weight for travel class (23 kg – Economy & Premium Economy, 32 kg – Business, First & Suites) when traveling to/from the US and Canada.
- 10 kg of baggage – all flights except to/from the US and Canada, when the Weight Concept applies.
Additionally, a fully collapsible stroller or pushchair and carry-cot or car seat may be checked without charge.
Infant and Children Amenities
Bassinets are available on board Singapore Airlines aircraft in a limited number and are assigned on a first come, first served basis. It is highly recommended for you to ask for one at the time of booking the flight. Please consider that a bassinet can hold a baby with a maximum weight of 14 kg (30.8 lbs), and its dimensions (L x W x H) are 76.8 x 29.8 x 15.8 cm (30.76 x 11.96 x 8 in).
Child meals are available on all Singapore Airlines flights, except those between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. This service must be requested at the time of booking. General baby amenities are also available for request onboard: diapers, baby wipes, feeding bottles, and disposable bibs. Anyhow, given that there is a limited amount of these amenities onboard, and they might not meet your specific requirements, it is advisable to bring your own supplies for a more comfortable journey.
Convertible In-flight Beds for Children
Travel gadgets that convert into leg rest or in-flight beds for children may be used on board Singapore Airlines flights. The convertible in-flight bed must be packed and stowed (in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front) during taxi, take-off, and landing and may only be used at the window seats (cannot be used in the emergency exit rows). The convertible in-flight bed should not exceed a total dimension of 115 cm (the sum of the length, width, and height of the fully deployed bed), and will be counted as part of your cabin baggage allowance.
