For children traveling without an adult companion as Unaccompanied Minors, US Airways offers assistance only on nonstop flights. While in the care of US Airways Unaccompanied Minors will be monitored by uniformed employees. From the point of departure to the final destination, US Airways employees provide assistance, but they are not qualified to administer/dispense medication or provide certain types of medical assistance.
For children traveling unaccompanied as young adults, on nonstop and connecting flights, without US Airways assistance, a note is made in the system so that US Airways personnel know a young adult is traveling alone.
Which age restrictions apply for children traveling without an adult companion?
Children under 5 years of age are not allowed to travel without an adult companion.
Children between 5 years and 14 years of age may travel without an adult companion as Unaccompanied Minors only on nonstop flights. US Airways assistance is required.
Children between 15 years and 17 years of age can travel alone as young adults. US Airways assistance is not required, but when requested, the restrictions regarding acceptance of Unaccompanied Minors imposed by US Airways will apply.
Unaccompanied Minor Service
You can book a flight for your child traveling alone online, but you must pay the service fee by calling US Airways Reservations or at the airport. Also, you can provide required information by phone, but you will still need to check-in with an US Airways representative at the ticket counter.
Restrictions
Unaccompanied Minors are not allowed to travel on connecting flights. All travel must be on flights on which the Unaccompanied Minor holds a confirmed reservation from the airport of origin to the airport of destination.
The Unaccompanied Minor is not accepted for travel if the flight on which he/she holds a reservation may terminate at an airport other than the child’s destination. In case of a flight cancellation, substantial delay, diversion, or other irregularity, US Airways will attempt to contact the person meeting the child and arrange alternate transportation if needed. Priority reaccommodation will be provided to the child. Adult supervision will be provided if an unexpected overnight stay is required.
Drop-off and pick-up
A parent or guardian must bring the Unaccompanied Minor to the airport and provide satisfactory evidence (name, address, and phone number) that the child will be met by another parent or responsible adult upon deplaning at the child’s destination. There are a few requirements when you are dropping off your child at the airport:
- You must identify yourself with a government-issued photo ID.
- Unaccompanied Minors must check-in at the airport ticket counter, where you are required to fill out the Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage form on the day of departure. The form will accompany your child throughout the trip.
- You must provide all legal documents required for international travel (passport, visa, etc.).
- You must remain in the airport until your child’s flight has departed. In U.S. airports only, you can obtain a pass at the ticket counter to take your child to the gate. If you are not allowed in the gate area, US Airways personnel will accompany your child to the gate.
The person meeting your child at the destination must show a government-issued photo ID matching the name you provided in the Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage form. In U.S. cities only, at US Airways ticket counters, a pass can be obtained to meet the Unaccompanied Minor at the gate.
Fee
Unaccompanied Minors are charged the applicable adult fare and are not eligible for discounts, even if available for that itinerary. In addition to the adult fare, US Airways charges a $ 100 fee each way. Only one such service charge will be assessed if two or more children from the same family (i.e. siblings, half-siblings, or step-siblings) are traveling together.
US Airways waives the fees for the first and second checked bags for Unaccompanied Minors who pay the service charge. Baggage fees are not waived for young adults for whom US Airways assistance was not requested.
