Xtra Airways is a charter airline that operates flights for a wide variety of clients to airports in the United States, Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America.
In 1987, Xtra Airways was established as Casino Express Airlines based in Elko, Nevada. The parent of Casino Express Airlines, McClaskey Enterprises, started the airline as a way to bring more customers to Elko, especially to Red Lion Hotel and Casino and other resorts owned by McClaskey Enterprises.
In 1989, Casino Express Airlines started operations using Boeing 737-200 aircraft and flying exclusively for the Red Lion Hotel and Casino.
Until 2005, the Casino Express flight program brought thousands of gamblers to the small casino town in Nevada. When doing business as Casino Express Airlines, the airline operated domestic scheduled service and domestic and international charter flights, primarily serving the needs of the hotel and casino operations in Elko.
In the summer of 2005, the ownership of the company was transferred through a management buyout. The new owners decided to broaden the airline’s scope to make it a profit-generating, commercially-driven operation.
In December 2005, the airline changed its name and rebranded from Casino Express to Xtra Airways to better reflect its broader focus.
In 2006, the casino-related flights were suspended because of reduced demand and higher fuel costs, and Xtra Airways diversified its service offerings, quickly expanded its customer base to include sports teams, press corps, government agencies, foreign dignitaries, etc.
In June 2010, Xtra Airways moved its headquarters to Boise, Idaho, to better position itself for sustained growth.
In December 2014, the airline was acquired by AerLine Holdings and received approval from the USDOT to use XTRAirways as a trade name. XTRA Airways rebranded as XTRAirways and unveiled its new livery on a Boeing 737-484.
In May 2015, Xtra Airways moved its corporate headquarters from Boise, Idaho to Coral Gables, Florida, near Miami International Airport.
No accidents involving Xtra Airways were registered so far.
